Spelling Homework
Students are required to complete a spelling homework page on Monday and Tuesday, a grammar skill page on Wednesday nights, and a reading comprehension page on Thursday nights. **The schedule of homework is subject to change on 4 days school weeks.
Math Homework
Students have math homework nightly, Monday - Thursday, which reinforces the skill taught that day.
Students should practice addition and subtraction facts each night for about 10 minutes. Fact fluency is critical to continued math success.
Reading Log
Each student is expected to read each night, Monday - Friday, for at least 10 minutes. This works out to about 40 minutes/week, and 160 minutes/month.
The Reading Log is located in your child's BEAR Binder, to be filled out each night. The students are able to fill this out on their own.
At the end of each month the Reading Logs are collected, used as a homework grade, and students who completed theirs thoroughly will be part of the Principal's Reading Club for that month.
In the event that a reading log is lost, you may write books read on any paper you have available at your house.
Nightly Math Fact Practice
Many students are struggling with knowing their math facts with automaticity. **The most common mistake students make is with their computation. Please help your child practice math facts each night so they can be more automatic with their addition and subtraction facts, and find more consistent success.**
In the coming months, students will begin the addition of larger numbers using regrouping. A BRAND NEW SKILL FOR 2ND GRADERS. Then, students will begin subtracting larger numbers with regrouping, which is typically a harder skill to master. Having a firm grasp on their math facts will only make the process of learning these new, more difficult, skills easier.
Please see the "Important Links and Resources" tab for academic, and fun, online math practice websites.
Weekly Spelling Test
Each Friday, students take a spelling test. If there is no school, or the student is absent, they should be prepared to take the test on the next day back to school.
Math Tests
Math tests will be given at the end of each chapter, and unit tests given upon the conclusion of each unit.
Students will beging taking weekly, timed, math fact quizzes to assess their automatic knowledge of their facts.
